A Fashion Magazine in Haskell
Posted by alpheccar - Feb 24 2008 at 20:15 CEST
If you want another proof that Haskell is going mainstream, here is one : a Fashion Magazine developed in Haskell. And I am happy because they are using my HPDF library to generate it. The mag is created in an automatic way from the blogs of the 360Fashion Network : a network of fashion professionals who try to give an insider view of the fashion industry. So, expect to see lots of pictures blogged from mobile phones during the fashion weeks.
Due to limitations in my PDF library (like the lack of a constraint library), the layout of the mag is still very simple. It is a development release that will improve as soon as I release an update to my library. So, now I have a good reason for continuing to work on it :-)
The desktop version is available at this link and the mobile version here. The mobile version is not as small as you may think but it is working on iPhone and S60 phones without problems.

Thanks Anina for being more positive than me :-)
fashion brings jobs

Karl Lagerfeld in an interview said that fashion provides a lot of jobs for people. from the making of the fabrics, to the cutting, sewing, in the manufacturing plants, to the designers, to the producers of the shows, to the sellers, to the buyers. fashion touches everything. fashion he said is also not about being dressed head to toe in one designer, it's about having one expensive piece that you prize, and mixing that with other pieces from h&m for example.
personally, i think we are here on this planet to express ourselves in creative positive ways. not everyone has yet learned how to express anger in a creative way or frustration, which is why we still have wars and kill and have negative things to say.
fashion helps people express who they feel on the inside they are, and may times having something that is like a power object, made well, cost money, you had to save up for it, but when you wear it it's like a medallion that gives you strength and power. can be shoes, can be a jacket, can be a bracelet, can be a watch. sometimes i think we are all decended from the kinights of the round table and we all have our power colors and clothese and armor that makes us feel good.
fashion is so important--otherwise why not all just go back to being mao.

I don't like when people are using the recession to justify their narrow moral vision which, by definition of moral, can only be personal and should not be forced upon others.
What's the problem if some people have money and they did not steal it ?
I have no problems with fashion magazines or luxury items. Also, fashion does not have to be expensive. It is a stereotype to think it.
I think it is unfair to allow the existence of all these pseudo economical/financial experts when I think about it.
Fashion Magazine

I wonder why many people are hooked up to using fashion magazines during these times of economic recession. It is easily accessible, yes, but do you think you can save money and invest using those fashion ads and periodicals? Fashion magazines are darned popular, helping the fashion industry have far more pull these days than it has seemed to ever have. Granted, it's likely that it has more to do with zealous marketing departments for fashion magazines than actual merit, but some high end periodicals such as the International Herald Tribune runs some fashion ads that seem irresponsible in a recession. For example, Luis Vuitton handbags (small luggage that costs about $1,000) and Rolex and Patek Phillipe watches cost way more than you'll be able to afford with online payday loans. (Casio works just as well, by the way.) It almost seems unfair to allow the existence of fashion magazines when you think about it.

The fashion magazine is temporarily offline. I was told it will be back as soon as their new web site is launched.
Reasons to study Haskell ...

OK, now I can add to the list of reasons to study Haskell for my students:
Perhaps they'll model some Haskell merchandise from haskell.org?
